Busta Rhymes - The Coming (Album Review)

Release Date : March 26, 1996
Label : Elektra Records

Busta Rhymes is one of those artist that cannot be duplicated, from his animated videos to his rapid fire flow to his charisma, just watch A Tribe Called Quest's classic Scenario video when Busta pops with the famous line Rah, rah, like a dungeon dragon, come on now how could you not be a fan of Busta? He's one of a kind and it shows on his debut The Coming. This album sounds like nothing else that was released at the time. The Coming is centered around that Apocalypse theme and like many others, Busta really thought the world was gonna end.

Busta still has fun on The Coming though, for instance, the singles Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check and It's a Party featuring Zhane' are fun party songs. On The Coming Intro, he gets at people who he feels is misrepresenting Hip-Hop, and tells the ones who fell off too keep falling, Lord Have Mercy and Rampage appear as well. The interesting part about intro is that in the album booklet, The 8th Wonder and Keep Falling are labeled as tracks. So its basically three songs in one. Then on Abandon Ship, Busta and Rampage exchange verses and they brought the best out of each other. And the song is produced by Busta himself.

Q-Tip assists Busta on The Ummah (credited as Q-Tip) produced Ill Vibe, Q gives you food for thought (No we don't promote no guns, but don't turn that cheek/ In the world that we live calmness is viewed as weak) and Bus rips it too (Rhymes create life like the birds and the bees/ Make Funk-Master Flex say yo I'm feeling these Flows make you shit in your drawers/ Change your dungarees). Also, check out the eight minute posse cut Flipmode Squad Meets Def Squad featuring Jamal, Redman, Keith Murray, Rampage, & Lord Have Mercy. Trust me you won't be disappointed .

The Leaders of the New School have a reunion on Keep It Movin' produced by Jay Dee (The Ummah). Other dope joints are Everything Remains Raw produced by Easy Mo Bee and Do My Thing produced by DJ Scratch. As for the low points of the album, Hot Fudge is definitely one of them and I wasn't too big on The Finish Line either. Also, some of the songs are too lengthy with skits at the end. Overall The Coming is a very good album by Bussa Bus. I recommend to any Hip-Hop fan.

4/5
