Stalley - Honest Cowboy (Review)

Release Date : September 17, 2013
Label : Maybach Music Group/Atlantic Records

MMG artist Stalley released his Honest Cowboy mixtape just last month on the 8th of August, the feedback was good so he decided to put it as an EP. Five songs come from the mixtape and it comes with two new songs. The most popular song from the EP would the Texas inspired Swangin. Stalley enlists Houston legend Scarface and singer Joi Tiffany. Stalley and Face pay homage to cars over the Block Beattaz smooth beat with a Chopped N Screwed hook. Then on The Highest featuring Crystal Torres, he shows his love for Mary Jane.

The Terrace Martin produced NineteenEighty7 is more harder than the other laid back tracks that Stalley raps over on the EP. He has some nice verses and Schoolboy Q is just on the hook. I'm surprised he didn't have a verse though, nonetheless its still a good song. The mellow piano driven Spaceships & Woodgrain is another highlight off the EP, not tot to mention DJ Quik and Cardo share the production duties. On Sticks And Stones featuring Rashad, Stalley raps about the things he went through, from getting into the rap game, to the doubters he had, to making a certain type of music so he could be accepted. He gives you pure honesty.

Honest Cowboy EP ends with Blue Collar Gang, and Rashad makes another appearance, which is about doing what you have to do to get by, whether hustlin' or working a 9 to 5. Overall there isn't any bad songs on the EP, but Stalley can get repetitive at times. He also uses a screwed voice for ad libs alot which can become a little annoying. And his flow barely changes. With that being said, Stalleys music aint for everybody so I suggest checking out the free mixtape version first. You can find it on Livemixtapes, Datpiff and other mixtape sites. Stalley is getting his fans warmed up for his debut album which is scheduled to drop at the top of next year. With or without Ross, Stalley is making sure his music is gonna be heard.
